History
‘A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.’ Marcus Garvey
The history curriculum at Carlyle Infant and Nursery Academy uses the National Curriculum (2014) as its core.
The national curriculum for history aims to ensure that all pupils:
•know changes within living memory. Where appropriate, these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national life
•know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world, including events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally
•Understand historical concepts such as change, similarities and differences, significance and drawing contrasts.
•Understand the methods of historical enquiry
•explore the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods
•research significant historical events, people and places in their own locality
Planning
The history long term plan is based on the programme of study from the National Curriculum (2014). Medium term plans are detailed and outline general success criteria and suggested activities, as well as the core curriculum content. Short term plans are produced on a week-to-week basis: these are personalised to each class and show differentiation, role of support staff, tasks and success criteria.
Vocabulary
Within their history lessons, children have a myriad of opportunities to build upon and develop the language and vocabulary that they are practising on a daily basis. With the belief that 'every lesson is a language lesson' underpinning our teaching philosophy the progression of historical vocabulary is developed through the practical application of historical knowledge through studying significant events and people from the past. The use of high-quality resources, such as Communication In Print and Tower Hamlet Sentence Stems are used to provide both support and challenge to pupils. There is also a bank of topic specific vocabulary.
