Geography
‘The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It is about understanding the complexity of our world.’ Barack Obama
The geography long term plan is based on the programme of study from the National Curriculum (2014). Medium term plans are detailed and outline general success criteria and suggested activities, as well as the core curriculum content. Short term plans are produced on a week-to-week basis: these are personalised to each class and show differentiation, role of support staff, tasks and success criteria.
Within their geography lessons, children have a myriad of opportunities to build upon and develop the language and vocabulary that they are practicing on a daily basis. In each lesson we introduce ‘Goldilock and Step on words’. These are words are introduced to the children at the beginning of each lesson. Through our teaching they have a deep understanding of the geographical vocabulary enabling them to use them in context during all cross curricular lessons.
With the belief that 'every lesson is a language lesson' underpinning our teaching philosophy, the progression of geographical vocabulary is developed through the practical application of geographical knowledge through studying different locations, including the UK and a non-European contrasting country and using geographical skills to describe different human and physical features of locations. The use of high-quality resources, such as Communication InPrint and Tower Hamlet Sentence Stems are used to provide both support and challenge to pupils. There is also a bank of topic specific vocabulary to ensure consistency across the school.
